Understanding USPS Postage Assessments and Inspections

This guide outlines USPS inspection practices, their expected impact on delivery timelines, and the steps Portless takes to resolve affected orders.

Updated this week

This article talks about why the United States Postal Service (USPS) carries out random postage inspections, how often they affect shipments, and what Portless does to support you when delays occur. These checks are rare, impacting fewer than one percent of orders each year, but they can temporarily slow delivery.

Why USPS inspects parcels

USPS is legally required to ensure proper postage is paid on every package. They have the authority to randomly open and inspect parcels to verify that the declared weight and postage class match the contents. This process helps them prevent fraudulent shipping practices.

Because we ship at extremely high volume, some of our packages may be selected for these routine checks. When this happens, a package is temporarily pulled from the standard mail stream, which can cause a delay of a few days.

How often does this impact orders

We understand that a delayed delivery can be frustrating for your customers, and we want to assure you that this is a very infrequent occurrence. Based on our data, we expect this type of inspection to impact less than 0.01% of your total orders over the course of a year. The volume of affected shipments is extremely low, and these delays are typically minor.

Our commitment to your customers

Despite the rarity of these events, we are committed to making sure your customers have an excellent experience. If an order is delayed due to a USPS inspection, we will work with you to find a solution.

For any impacted orders, we will provide compensation for the cost of shipping and the cost of the goods, or we will reship the order at no additional charge.

To get this process started, please submit a ticket to our support team with the order details. We will review the case and ensure a swift resolution.
