Understanding Automatic HTS Code Classification for US Shipments

This guide outlines Portless’s standardized HTS code classification process for U.S. shipments and the steps merchants must complete to stay compliant.

Updated this week

Portless is standardizing how we classify Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) Codes for goods shipped to the United States. To streamline the process and ensure compliance, Portless automatically classifies the necessary HTS Codes. This new method simplifies customs classification for you, but it requires one crucial action item to avoid any disruption to your order fulfillment.

Things to keep in mind

Review and update the product declared value

The accuracy of your product data is essential for our new classification system and for successful customs clearance. You must confirm that the Declared Value is correctly filled out for every product.

  • Visit the Products section in your Portless Merchant Portal.

  • Review all active SKUs listed in the section.

  • Confirm and update the Declared Value to ensure it is accurate for every product.

Accurate Declared Values allow the system to function correctly and prevent delays or issues with customs during shipment to the United States.

How HTS Code Classification works

Portless is taking over the technical classification process. We use an automated engine to determine the correct HTS Code for your products based on the information you provide.

  • The HTS Code Engine pulls product descriptions directly from your connected eCommerce platform (e.g., Shopify).

  • The engine analyzes the description to assign the most appropriate HTS Code for customs declaration.

  • Accurate product descriptions are therefore critical to ensure the correct code is assigned.
